On Friday, November 15th, 2024, the Final Conference of the VERA project brought together an inspiring group of professionals, athletes, and advocates at the iconic Flagey Building in Brussels. As the curtain falls on this European initiative, we at EASE reflect on the profound impact this project has had and the great experiences we have shared along the way.
The VERA project, « Voice for Equality and Rights of Women Athletes », has been a beacon of hope for gender equality in sports. Led by ASSIST, the Italian association dedicated to the protection of women athletes’rights, and supported by an exceptional consortium of partners across Europe, VERA has brought fort a collaborative spirit that underlines the importance of unity in the pursuit of justice and equity in sports.
Over the past three years, we have had the privilege of working alongside remarkable organizations, each bringing their unique expertise to the table : the Alice Milliat Foundation, the AJFSF for female futsal players in Spain, the sports law firm CRESTA, the Slovenian Football Association NZS, and Sport Evolution Alliance.
Our role in assessing the European landscape of women athletes’rights allowed us to delve into critical issues such as maternity protections, medical and technical support, and broader regulatory frameworks. This work has not only deepened our understanding but also strenghtened our resolve to conitnue advocating for women in sport.
The Conference on November 15th was a fitting conclusion to this remarkable initiative, featuring impactful discussions, heartfelt testimonies, and forward-looking strategies. It was a moment to celebrate the achievements of VERA, but also to acknowledge that the road ahead remains long. The shared passion and energy in the room served as a testament to what has been accomplished, and to what remains to be done.
As VERA concludes, its impact will echo far beyond the project’s lifespan. The network formed, the insights gained, and the commitments made will continue to inspire actions that advance the rights of women athletes across Europe and beyond. It is with immense pride and gratitude that we celebrate the conclusion of VERA, confident that its legacy will resonate for years to come.
To all who have been part of this journey: thank you.
